Important Tax Exemption Information for New Homeowners

Homestead Exemption Filing Changes Effective January 1st

Effective January 1, 2022, a Buyer may file for a homestead exemption immediately after closing if the Seller did not have a homestead exemption on the property for the current tax year.

Tax Exemptions were previously determined by the status of the occupant on January 1st of each tax year and you would have to wait until January 1 following the year you purchase to file.

Tax Exemption for New Homeowners

Exemptions are a form of tax relief that can reduce the taxable value of your property.
Types of exemptions include:

  • Homestead
  • Over 65 years of age
  • Disabled individual
  • Disabled veteran
  • Agricultural

Homestead exemptions, being the most common one, remove part of your home’s value from taxation, so they lower your taxes. For example, your home is appraised at $100,000, and you qualify for a $25,000 exemption (this is the amount mandated for school districts), you will pay school taxes on the home as if it was worth only $75,000.

Who is Qualified to File Homestead Exemption

If you own and occupy your new home and it is your homestead, you likely qualify for a homestead exemption. You have until April 30 of this year to file this exemption. Most counties have Exemption Forms on their website.

How to Apply

  1. To apply for an exemption, the homeowner, in most cases, must be occupying the property as their homestead on January 1st of the tax year in which the exemption is granted. It may be possible to apply for an exemption sooner. Please reach out to your county appraisal district to confirm the date that you may apply.
  2. When submitting an application for exemptions, you will need the date of occupancy and a copy of your driver’s license. The address on your license must match the property address of the property you are filing the exemption for.
  3. The forms can be downloaded on the Central Appraisal District’s website for the county in which the property is located. If your property is in Harris County, you can download the HCAD mobile app or fill in a digital form. Use the list below to find your county and corresponding website.
